God's Mysterious ways

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:28-31 (NRSV)

When Palakunnathu Mathew, from Kerala, India, started off on a morning walk, it was a bright and sunny day with no hint of rain. While walking through the hills and valleys, enjoying the beauty all around - the wind whipped up a wonderful dance of leaves and the crescendo of crickets started chirping. Then, without warning, the weather changed, bringing a heavy rush of showers. Disappointed that the rain disrupted the walk, Palakunnathu ran to take shelter in a small building by the wayside. As the rain continued, an elderly man joined Palakunnathu to escape the rain. They began to talk about the town where they lived. As a longtime resident of the town, the gentleman recounted many interesting stories of how it had changed over the years. When the rain stopped, they parted. While walking home Palakunnathu realized that just as the rain had come unannounced, new perspectives about life can arrive in unexpected ways.

Life is unpredictable, bringing difficulties to each of us. AT first problems seem a burden, and we might want to curse our circumstances or blame God. Sometimes roadblocks lead to small miracles - or at least insights - that can shape our understanding, helping us to know God in a new way and to trust God more fully.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to see that hindrances to our plans can bring us closer to you, in Jesus' name, amen.
