Time Remaining

Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people, but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Ephesians 5: 15-17 (NRSV)

So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. Psalm 90:12 (NRSV)

In William Avery Pike, Jr's youth, summer seemed to last forever. Then as he pushed past 65, that was not the case anymore. He was particularly aware of the way time passed each time he rode a stationary bike at his local gym. A monitor on the bike gave him all kinds of information, but he was focused on two categories: time elapsed and time remaining.

Today's reading from Ephesians reminds us to live wisely, "making the most of the time" (v.16). When William thinks about the time elapsed in his life, he knows that he hasn't been very wise. Isn't that true of most of us. Perhaps that is why William wanted to focus his remaining time in life on the things God needed for him to do in the future.

How does one accomplish this? For starters, we must fully comprehend that time is a blink in the whirlwind of life. God will send us opportunities, but if we make excuses, then we will miss the chance to help people in need. Time is ticking. From now on, instead of hesitating, William is going to listen to God and get busy. How about you?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to be wise in using our time for your good, in Jesus' name, amen.
