Extravagant Love

After he (Jesus) had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord - and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For i have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them." John 13:12-17 (NRSV)

Kay Hawk's sister gave her a very expensive gift for her birthday. It was not unusual for her sister to show such generosity. Ever since she became a believer and servant of Jesus Christ in the sixth grade, Kay' s life and the lives of many others had been changed forever by her extravagant love. Her sister shares all she has: food from her bountiful garden, medical knowledge and life wisdom, baked goods, and hours of service. Many people in their community remember her for her years of service as a youth leader, and many more have shared in a community meal served each month at their church.

The radical, humble, and extravagant love Jesus showed to his disciples as he washed their feet was hard for them to accept; but that act taught us that we are to serve God by loving and humbly serving others. James 1:22 reminds us, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." When we accept that love of Jesus, we become vessels to show that love to others.

Action is stronger than words. Put your love for Jesus into action today!

Prayer: God of love, thank you for the love you poured out on us through your Son. Fill us to overflowing so that we may share your love with others, in Jesus; name, amen.
