"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God - what is good and acceptable and perfect." Romans 12:2 (NRSV)

John Groves, from Maryland, was approaching his senior years when God let him know in no uncertain terms that his many years of prodigal-son-type bad behavior - excessive drinking and gambling, for instance - needed to come to an end. After crashing his truck into a tree during one of his drunken stupors, John finally saw a clear choice: He should allow God to rule the rest of his life, or he could choose the world. John made the decision to let God's love, grace, and forgiveness convert him into a fruitful Christian, which began with repentance and breaking away from the wasteful life he had led for 55 years.

Abstaining from that lifestyle of reckless behavior changed his life to one worth living - fasting from my worldly ways in order to feast on God's word. John now tries to serve others and give back in gratitude for all God has given him. John will always be a Christian who is under construction, attempting to refrain from the bad habits that plagued him for so many years. But now he has a Savior who has transformed him into a wiser, loving, and more caring person.

Most of us can relate to John's story. We have pasts that sometimes needed just a touch up and sometimes needed a major overhaul We are all on a journey, trying to improve ourselves, with God's love and grace. We can't do this on our own, but with God's mercy and forgiveness, we can move on and become better persons. Sometimes we slip and fall backwards, but we can always get up and start over; because there is nothing we do that God won't forgive if we confess and repent from our sins.

Prayer: Dear God, guide us each day so that we may come tp love you more and do your will, in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
