Make a Joyful Noise

psalm 100: 1-2 Make a Joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. (NRSV)

As a young girl, I used to love to sing in church, in the back of the car, or wherever I was. I sang with gusto, without worrying whether I was on tune or off-key. My mother would say, "Please sing something i don't know cause you can't carry a tune in hand-basket." I simply sang with all my heart and voice. Everyone in the congregation knew, without a doubt, that I loved to praise God. Years later, God has improved my singing and I still love to praise God thru music.

In the Psalms, I read how David praised God, even when he was being pursued by his enemies. Hebrews 13:15 says, "Through Jesus...let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise - the fruit of lips that openly profess his name." Colossians 3:16 also reminds us to allow the word of Christ to dwell in us and to praise God with singing and gratitude.

I wonder how often our insecurities hamper our worship. Do we sing more quietly because we worry we will sing off-key? Maybe we can learn to come before God and worship like a small child, not worrying about how we sound but simply singing praises for God's mercy and love.

Prayer: Dear god, thank you for the blessings you have given us. Help us to praise you joyfully and without hesitation, in Jesus' name. Amen.
