God is Good
Psalm 13:5-6 "But I trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me." (NRSV)
Did you ever have a birthday that was awful? I remember one when no one, not one person, wished me a Happy Birthday that day. And then there have been wonderful celebrations with family and friends. Debra Pierce, from Massachusetts, relates that on her 60th birthday, she sent her sister an email that said, "I'm healthy, happy, married to a great guy, and I own a business caring for animals. Praise God, my dreams have come to fruition!"
She also relates that birthdays weren't always a cause for celebration. On her 40th birthday, she was depressed, lived alone, worked two jobs, and struggled with finances. When she thought about her future, it brought fears of relentless struggles with loneliness and hopelessness. She did not celebrate her 40th birthday but only felt deep sadness.
Her fears and sadness were transformed into hopefulness several months later when she began to attend church. She went seeking God's solace and received God's mercy and grace. She made Christian friends. She met her future husband while serving on a mission-ministry team. And she launched a successful pet-care business.
God can deliver us from the fears that smother our hope, but God's blessings require our participation. Psalm 34>8 invites us to "taste and see that the Lord is good" (NIV). Seeking God can transform our lives.
Prayer: God of goodness and grace, thank you for delivering us from our fears. Amen.
