Eating Rocks?

Read Psalm 37: 1-9

Song of Solomon 2:4 "He brought me to the banqueting house, and his intention toward me was love." (NRSV)

Christie Thomas tells of an incident when she found her toddler sitting on the stairs, contentedly shoving rocks into his mouth. She fished out the rocks and carried him to the table to eat dessert. Frustrated at being torn away from his treasure, he screamed and flailed until he saw the chocolate cake at the table. He stopped all his noise and his eyes widened with joy.

The adults at the table laughed, because who would be willing to choose rocks over chocolate cake? But don't we all do the same thing every day? Aren't we content with the meaningless activities and things that fill our daily life. We grin, happy with what we have gained. Just like this little boy; sitting on the stairs, thinking we have found pure joy. But really God wants to invite each of us to his banquet table where true joy can be found. We get frustrated when what we want is taken away, not realizing what glory is waiting just beyond our sight. How about you? I want to delight in the Lord and to replace my own desires with the desires that lead to God. I want God to teach me to love and seek true joy.

Dear God, help us to trust in your love. Direct our thoughts and desires toward you and the true joy you offer, in Jesus' name, amen.
