Fear-Conquering Love

"So don't worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

"So don't be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of your tomorrow too. Live one day at a time." Matthew 6:31-34 (TLB)

Laura Rothhaar lives in Ohio. Once again, she felt paralyzed and completely helpless. As the darkness of her bedroom closed in on her, panic rose in her chest. All too often, fear seemed to rule her life. Questions about her future, her career, her financial situation, her rocky relationship with her significant other, her ill family members - the list never ended - gnawed st her mind.

As Laura laid on her back staring at the ceiling, she remembered the words of Matthew 6:34 quoted above. She realized how much this never-ending cycle of fear with its tossing and turning at night and worrying was hurting her spiritual life as it controlled her thoughts and actions. However, she knew that Jesus loves her and died to save her and that He is sovereign over all.

As the apostle John wrote, fear cannot exist where love is in complete control; if Laura feared, she was not made perfect in love. (See 1 John 4:18) Laura mentally recited all the ways in which God had provided for her time and time again. As she reflected, she realized that through every trial, Jesus was present and had never failed to give her what she needed. Taking a deep breath, Laura prayed, telling God about all her worries and fears and praying for peace as she drifted off to sleep.

Part of the advantage of growing old is being able to look back and see how God has always been there, even if at times it didn't feel like it. God loves me and He loves you! Give your worries and fears to God today and enjoy a good nights sleep.

Prayer: Dear God, give us a deeper understanding of your love so that fear no longer rules our lives, in Jesus' name, amen.
