A Single Red Feather

We live within the shadow of the Almighty, sheltered by the God who is above all gods.

This I declare, that he alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I am trusting him. For he rescues you from every trap, and protects you from the fatal plague. He will shield you with his wings! They will shelter you. His faithful promises are your armor. Now you don't need to be afraid of the dark any more, not fear the dangers of the day; nor dread the plagues of darkness, nor disasters in the morning! Psalm 91: 1-6 (TLB)

Protect me as you would the pupil of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings as you hover over me. Psalm 17:8 (TLB)

Jeanne C. Gore lives in North Carolina. As predicted, the severe thunderstorms had blown through their area with a vengeance; but now the sun shown more radiantly than usual. Yet Jeanne felt as broken as the tree limbs she was collecting. The weight of the world pressed on her: concerns over family health issues, finances, fracture relationships. She struggled to banish these issues from her thoughts. She tried to focus on the blessings she had received and on those yet to come.

The joyful trill of birds filtered through her disturbed thoughts. As she listened, a male cardinal landed on a limb directly above her. He threw back his head and serenaded her with gusto. His voice rose above all the others. Enthralled, Jeanne watched him for several minutes until a single red feather fluttered in the breeze and landed at her feet. The feather was perfect, just as God had created it.

Jeanne saved the feather and laminated it in plastic for use as a bookmark. It now marks Psalm 91 in her Bible as a reminder of God's steadfast presence in her life. To her the feather represents hope. Jeanne knows she cannot expect a trouble-free life. Regardless of the trials that come her way, she is assured that God is with her and that she will always find refuge beneath God's sheltering wings.

We too can find shelter beneath God's wings if we just trust in Him to protect us through out this life.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, thank you for being our shield and protection through the trials we face. Help us to see the joy in each day, in Jesus' name, amen.
