Heavy Burdens

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Psalm 46: 1-7 (NRSV)

And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. 1 Peter 5:10 (NRSV)

As Jill Maisch, from Maryland, was going thru the difficult end of a marriage and moving into the even-more-challenging role of a single parent, she became an expert in hiding her emotions. In Public she pretended to be confident and cheerful while in reality she was self-doubting, depressed, and drained. At first she was able to express her true feelings only during times of prayer when her words were flooded by tears of anger, anxiety, and aggravation. Eventually, she acknowledged that she was unable to handle things alone and allowed God to carry her burdens. This happened through sharing with trusted friends at church who were experiencing similar situations, engaging in weekly conversations with a Christian therapist, and adopting a healthier lifestyle through improved nutrition and regular exercise. God faithfully continued to love, encourage, and walk beside her every moment of every day, and she experienced the rest and renewal she so desperately needed.

Hiding our true feelings is exhausting and doesn't really help a troubling situation. Letting go and allowing God to carry our heavy burdens does help. God loves each of us. As we read the Bible and devote time to prayer, we can sense God's presence with us - giving us strength and rest.

Prayer: Loving God, may we always be aware of your closeness and willingness to carry our burdens, in Jesus' name, amen.
