The Power of Prayer
Paul's prayer: "For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen." Ephesians 3: 14-21 (NRSV)
"So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." Mark 11:24 (NRSV)
Beatriz Nasso, from Uruguay, was born into a Christian family and they attended church every Sunday. But when her parents separated during her adolescence, she went through a crisis of faith. For many years, Beatriz asked: Does God exist? Why does God allow such suffering in my family> She concentrated on her studies, continued her education, and became a nurse. Then she got a job in a children's hospital.
Beatriz was one of the nurses on call in the emergency unit when a 12-year-old girl named Alejandra was brought in. She was in a coma suffering from meningitis. The other nurse told Beatriz : "Stay with Alejandra. I will manage the other patients in the unit." Beatriz didn't know why, but she started to pray. She prayed with faith throughout the night, trusting that the child would not die, that God would intercede. At 5:45 the next morning, just before her shift ended, Alejandra opened her eyes, took my hand and said, "Beatriz."
After this experience, Beatriz has maintained the discipline of prayer because she now understands that God is with us every moment and in every situation. God never abandons us.
"Good things happen when we pray."
Prayer: Giver of all good things, You have plans for each of us. You know when our faith is vulnerable, and You respond to renew our hope. We thank you in Jesus' name. Amen.
Thought for the day: Whom will you pray for today?
