A Constant Companion

Nevertheless I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me with honor. Whom have i in heaven but you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73: 23-26 (NRSV)

Submit yourselves therefore to God. resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. .... Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you. James 4: 7-8,10 (NRSV)

Recently, one of Beth DeLong's preschool students and her were alone outside. Out of the blue, the child asked her, "Why do I have to believe in God?" Beth answered, "Well, you don't have to believe in God; but I sure do. I can't imagine my life without God." They had a short discussion about some of the things God made before moving on to another subject.

Her student's question challenged her to think about why she believed in God. As Beth had told her student, she couldn't imagine her life without her solid relationship with our Creator. God is her constant companion, her savior, and her best friend. She can talk to God about anything and everything. In the early-morning silence, she spends time alone with God as she drinks her coffee. She tells God what's on her mind and ask for guidance. I relate to Beth as I also have this relationship with my heavenly father. i talk to Him all the time, and He is what gets me thru each day.

Throughout the day Beth prays, "Help me, Lord!" Or "Please, Lord." Or "What do you think, Lord?" Lately she has found herself offering confession at bedtime and saying, "I'm sorry, Lord." It is comforting to know that God loves me (Beth), hears me, answers me and forgives me. Like Beth, I am also grateful. It is a great comfort to know that God is always there watching over me, no matter what is going on in my life.

Prayer: Thank you God, for being a constant presence in our lives. We need you in all the circumstances of our day-by-day living. Thank you for sending Jesus that we might be restored to this close relationship with You, in Jesus' name, amen.
