"I Got You!"

"Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. " Isaiah 41:10 (NRSV)

James Baumberger, from Connecticut, spent his first summer ministry as an intern accompanying the youth pastor on a number of wilderness ventures in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Each adventure ended with a rock-climbing activity. James is not found of heights but agreed to take part, thinking, "How tall could a cliff be in New England?" But at the bottom of a 300-foot cliff, his fear kicked in. Their expert guide was secured at the top of the cliff and waited for his assistant to tie James into the harness. Slowly he began his clumsy ascent. At 20 feet, James almost froze with fear, but he heard the voice of the guide above him: "I got you!" As long as James kept a tight hold on the rope, he felt sure that the guide was there and guiding him. His encouragement and instructions helped James make it to the top.

Jesus promised that he would always be with us and that he would uphold us through anything we might encounter. When we feel as if we are hanging off a tall cliff with no help in sight, we can recall the promises of God to be with us through it all. God will hold us tightly and instruct us in the way we should go. If we listen, we will hear the encouraging words of the Lord: "I got you!"

There is a key phrase here - "If we listen". Too many times we don't listen, or we don't like what we hear, so we want to do it our way. That is when we get into real trouble. Find time to "listen" and to obey.

Prayer: Wonderful Lord, thank you for reassuring us that you are greater than anything we may face. Help us to listen for Your voice and to follow You, in Jesus' name, amen.
