Calmed by Prayer

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4: 4-7 (NRSV)

At barely 16, Preston Burke, from Texas, was the youngest lineman on the varsity football team. His performance in summer practices had landed him the position of the starting right guard, replacing a graduate who was at one time the Offensive Lineman of the Year. Under the weight of everyone's expectations, Preston felt overwhelming anxiety.

When game day finally came, Preston couldn't even eat because he was so nervous. Right after he finished putting on his pads, he listened to his music and then began to pray - asking God to help him perform his best and not to get injured. He then begged God to give him peace during this time of worry. At that point, Preston heard a voice in his mind saying, "I'm here to help."

During that amazing moment, an overwhelming peace came upon Preston, and he was in awe that God was with him and would help. From that moment on, every time that Preston prayed about an issue in his life, he felt an indescribable and overwhelming peace. He was amazed that Almighty God, the Creator of everything, wants to hear our requests and needs.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for listening to our prayers every time we have a request or need. Help us to remember to always trust in you to help. We pray in the precious name of Jesys, Amen.
