Perfect Trust

I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall be continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me from all my fears. Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed. This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. Psalm 34:1-8 (NRSV)

Dorothy O'Neill, from South Australia, shared the story of her five-year old daughter, who was eager to help her mom bake a fruitcake. She would fetch the flour and the sultanas from the pantry as her mom read out the ingredients in turn. Mom said "Eggs," and her daughter opened the fridge. Dorothy briefly turned away to retrieve the egg beater from the drawer and crash! The whole box of eggs splattered on the kitchen floor. Dorothy couldn't hide her dismay. Money was short and now there were no eggs. Her daughter looked up at her mom unperturbed, "Don't worry, Mummy," she said, "Daddy can mend them."

While her little girl's faith in her beloved father was the perfect reminder to Dorothy of the faith we can have in our heavenly Father's ability to repair the damage in our lives. While my daughter's father could not put broken eggs back together, nothing is impossible for our heavenly Father, who cares for us and waits only to be asked for help. Even if we think our lives are broken beyond repair, our Father can mend them when we entrust our struggles to him.

Prayer: Loving Father, we bring to you what is broken in our lives. We place the pieces in your loving hands as we ask for and accept your help, in Jesus' name, amen.
