Isaiah 33:5-6 "The Lord is exalted, He dwells on high; He filled Zion with justice and righteousness; He will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is Zion's treasure. (NRSV)
For May Patterson, from Alabama, the day was hot, but the inside of her heart felt cold and fragile. Tears streaked down her face as her twin boys headed off to college. Her day-to-day mothering had come to a screeching halt that morning, leaving her to face an empty nest.
Later that week, a pair of doves built a nest on May's trellis. When their babies hatched, the nest hummed with activity. The parents worked constantly to feed the hungry chicks. The babies grew quickly, and soon the nest became too crowded. One morning, May noticed that the nest was empty. The doves - not just the chicks, but the parents as well - had moved on.
The birds taught May that God has designed our lives to have changing roles and seasons. As May watched the birds, God prompted her to seek a new role for her new season - in this case, a second career as a writer.
As we face the changing seasons of our lives, we can go to God for stability, wisdom, and knowledge. Thankfully, God weaves blessings into each season of life.
For me, my life centered around nursing from the time I graduated from high school to the time I retired. Then I asked God for a year off, which He granted. But then He put me back to work - first with family, then with church, and now as a church office assistant. I never thought i would work in an office but this has been the most fulfilling job I have ever had. You just don't know where God is leading sometimes, but if we rely on Him, He will bring out the best for us.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to face each change with faith. provide stability, wisdom, and strengtth so that we may adapy to new roles and seasons well. Amen.
