From where will my help come?

Psalm 121: 1-2 "I lift up mt eyes to the hills - from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth." (NRSV)

They say Florida is flat, but it does have its hills. But for mountains one needs to see the Colorado Rockies or the Canadian Rockies. I believe these kind of mountains are what the psalmist was referring to. When I was in Israel, the mountain areas were very steep and difficult to navigate. If you stand close to a mountain, at its bottom, you can only see a small portion of that mountain. It you looked up at the distant jagged peaks, you could not tell if that was the summit of the massive rock formation. You were just too close to see the whole mountain.

Sometimes we are so close to a problem that we cannot see any possible solution. All we can do is cry for help. I wonder if the psalmist felt this way when he wrote, "I raise my eyes towards the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth."

When faced with a problem that seems insurmountable, I remember Psalm 121. When I look at the mountains, I realize God, the maker of mountains, is greater than creation. No problem I face is a problem for God. God is able to handle any problem that I might encounter. I just need to remember and trust in HIm.

Prayer: Creator God, help us always to trust in Your strength. With Your help, we can overcome any challenge, in Jesus' name, amen.
