Psalm 46:1-3 "God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear, even if earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam, Let the mountains tremble at the waters surge!" (NLT)
Bob Peterson, from Texas, relates the time when he and a friend were enjoying bass-fishing on Lake Livingston in Texas. They had a good catch. The weather was perfect until a fierce storm blew up rather quickly. They were near the start of Kickapoo Creek, so they quickly stowed up their gear, ran the boat at full speed, looking for a place where they would be safe and secure from the rain.
Just in time, they spotted an empty, covered boat dock in the back of a small cove just off the creek channel. The dock became their refuge while the storm raged.
The rain came so fast and heavy that they could see a foaming stream of runoff rushing in the main channel about two feet above water level. The power of the stream would have surely swamped their boat. Later they learned that a tornado had touched down near by.
As Bob reflected on that day, he remembered those times when the storms of life arise, often without warning. These storms can be frightening with their challenges and interrupt our dreams.
But just as the boat dock offered shelter from the thunderstorm, we can find shelter in the arms and protection of God. What comfort to know that God hears our prayers and is working for our good in all the circumstances of our lives!
Almighty and loving God, thank you for hearing our prayers and for giving us refuge, security, and peace, during the storms of life, in Jesus' name amen.
